The Kick-Off Screening Party

On Saturday, August 27th, the South Side Home Movie Project screened a selection of films at the Little Black Pearl Art & Design Center to an astounding audience of 100 people! All films were from the home film collections of families from a variety of areas on the South Side, featuring such locations as Bridgeport, Bronzeville, Woodlawn and vacation spots in Michigan.

Audience members included members of the University of Chicago community, families featured in the films, film enthusiasts and passerbys around Little Black Pearl. With a popcorn machine serving free fresh popcorn, the audience watched intently at the footage revealing the family lives of previous decades. Donors of the films were invited to describe the events and people in their films and the audience was encouraged to ask questions while the movies were playing. Kids ran about and soft music of past generations accompanied several films creating a comfortable atmosphere appropriate for the watching of home movies! Most people recognized familiar locations around the South Side, such as the 57th Street beach, Shoesmith Elementary and Jackson Park. Perhaps one of the favorites was the Horde family's dramatized 8mm footage of the cutting of Mr. Horde's facial hair from the late 60s.

Afterwards, everyone was invited to a reception where delicious sandwiches, cheeses, fruit, wine and refreshments were served. Professor Jacqueline Stewart and her team of students who worked on the project received many praises for a successful event and were open to more questions for anyone interested in the Project.
